Antioch

Antioch is named after the wife of Seleucus I, who enlarged a town founded in 307 BC by Alexander's general Antigonus. The Romans called it Antiochia ad Orontes because of the river that crossed it. In the 2nd century AD it had 500,000 inhabitants and for several centuries it was the main centre of the Eastern Roman and Byzantine Empires.
